Three poems that all show different understandings of love Essay

The poems by Andrew Marvell, Christina Rossetti and Thomas Hood all explore the many different aspects of love and relationships. The three poets all discuss how love can begin and finish or it can come tragically to a sudden end. Their ideas about love can sometimes be based upon past experiences or written for the moment in time.

The three poems all show different understandings of love and the first poem To His Coy Mistress is about a man seducing a woman by flattering her and complimenting her to get her into bed for sexual intercourse “Two hundred to adore each breast” is one of the many compliments that he gives her but then he starts to get bitter as he does not receive a response of the lady which almost makes it seem as though the woman is leading him on and then he says “Thy beauty shall no more be found” which is a sign of frustration but this poem also outlines how the man was the dominant character in the 19th century and how the woman almost made the 2nd rate person in the household.

The main philosophy behind the poem is to “seize the day” as we don’t live forever and all of us will eventually die. The meaning in remember is slightly similar to To His Coy Mistress as they both mention death and explain how it is the only definite thing in every persons life. The meaning in remember is about a woman talking to her lover saying that even though death is something that will definitely happen no matter what. Rossetti says “Better by far you should forget and smile, than that you should remember and be sad” which basically means when you look back remember the happy and special moments rather than looking back and regretting certain things that were done and said and be sad because we all expect death.

The meaning of Faithless Sally Brown is linked up to Remember because they both talk about how strong love is to each individual. In Faithless Sally Brown Thomas Hood shows how love is stronger in one person’s heart in a relationship than the other. In the poem Sally & Ben are a couple but Ben gets taken away by a gang while Sally and Ben go for a walk one day and is made to work for 2 years on a ship going around the world. When Ben returns “He found she’d found another Ben, whose Christian name was John” and this quotation shows a rapid change of affection from Ben and so he decides to kill himself which brings a tragic and this shows how a love is never too strong between two people and any love can come tragically to an end.

The three meanings all have the mentioning of death in common and all show how much people valued love at the time and era. The language in all three poems is quite similar. The language in To His Coy Mistress is extremely descriptive by Andrew Marvell for extreme flattery “And you should love, if you please, refuse till the conversion of the Jews. ” There is no colloquial language in the poem. “My vegetable love should grow vaster than empires. ” These lines from the poem create a picture in the reader’s mind which is very effective. This poem is an enjambment as it is a continuous argument and it uses enjambment to sustain the flow of the poem and continue with the beat and this also helps the poem rhyme as it ends the lines with certain words.

The language in Remember is very similar to To His Coy Mistress as it doesn’t contain any colloquial language and creates a picture in the readers mind with certain lines which is very effective effect but is also very different as it is very euphemistic because of how people used to react to death in the 19th century and although she is talking about a tragic event in everyone’s life that people never look forward to and don’t enjoy being involved with the way Rossetti structures it and the language she uses doesn’t make it sound as bad which is very hard to do especially with a subject like death. The language in Faithless Sally Brown is quite diverse to the other two poems as it contains lots of colloquial language and lots of puns.

A pun “Twas was nothing but a feint. ” This is very effective in the poem as it has two meanings and questions the reader and makes them read around the text and with the text being more complex it makes the reader look into the poem a lot more. The language is mournful in the beginning and in a few other parts. The poem is actually tragic in the story line but is wrote in a light hearted way which doesn’t give away a serious and heart-rending meaning to the poem and requires the reader to look deep into it to acquire the true meaning. The three poems are written using different language to create different effects but the language is fitting for each poem.

The structure in To His Coy Mistress is as a syllogism. It is set out as a logical argument in 3 distinct verses had, but and now. The poem talks about the different moods and attitudes shown in the 3 paragraphs. There is flattery in the 1st paragraph where the man is complimenting the woman, then in the 2nd paragraph as the man isn’t getting anyway he gets aggressive and frustrated and therefore starts to talk to the woman about how quick time flies by and says “Then worms shall try that long-preserved virginity” and this means that if you are going to die soon if you don’t lose your virginity now then only the worms will in the grave when you’re buried.

In the 3rd paragraph the man starts to say that your beauty will not last forever and soon you will turn wrinkly and old and no one will like you for your looks so take this chance now while you can. The poem Remember is structured totally different as it is set out as a sonnet, but not an Elizabethan sonnet as it has a break in the middle and is set out in two parts a sextet (6 lines) and an octet (8 lines) which is different as an Elizabethan sonnet has no breaks and is sang from beginning to end with no stop. The sextet part of the poem is the mournful part. The octet part is the uplifting part as it says to talk about death in a good way and about the couples good times when they were together and not to miss her when she is gone and be sad and to continue with your life.

The structure of Faithless Sally Brown in very different to the other two because it is a ballad poem and set out in stanzas. It is like a traditional ballad like a folk song telling a story and it focuses on a dramatic event. It is set out in quatrains and the poem is written in iambic pentameter as it in rhyming couplets and is in a rhyme scheme. There is a pattern of beats and stresses in a line or a number of lines and the rhyme carries on throughout the poem from the beginning to the end. There aren’t any similarities about the structure on one hand but there aren’t very many differences either on the other hand and the main difference is the size of the poem.

The tone in To His Coy Mistress is very strange as it is very flattering towards the woman at first “My vegetable love should grow vaster than empires and more slow” is one of the lines Marvell uses as the man tries to seduce the woman into bed for sexual intercourse, but as none of the flattery works it seems the woman is leading the man on. In the second part of the poem the man gets bitter and angry so therefore he becomes realistic and says “Thy beauty shall no more be found; nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound my echoing song; then worms shall try that long-preserved virginity: and your quaint honour turn to dust; and into ashes all my lust”, is one of the stages where the poet comes back to reality and this also links up to Remember as they both mention and talk about death in detail. The tone also creates a picture in the reader’s mind of a man trying to seduce a woman which is quite effective.

Then eventually in the third the man starts to flatter her again and then slowly comes back to reality which brings another turn in the poem which shows a change in feelings again. The tone in Remember though is very mournful and then uplifting and the tone of the voice is very soft and gentle coming direct from the poet to her lover as t seems. The poem is at first down falling but then it the second paragraph is totally the opposite. The poet is wrote as though Rossetti is speaking to her lover or the reader directly which is a very good way of writing it to make the reader feel more involved. This also creates a picture in the reader’s mind of the couple together looking directly at each other and talking straight from the heart.

Rossetti talks about a sad and tragic event that is going to happen to every in their life but takes it as a bad subject and makes it as a positive in a person’s life rather than a negative by reminding people of how many memories are gained from a persons life and that they should be taken into perspective rather than all the negatives. The poet expresses her ideas by giving her opinion on death and taken something bad and referred to it as something not too bad as though it seems. The tone in Faithless Sally Brown and Remember is quite different as they both talk about death and relationships but in a totally different way. The tone in Faithless Sally Brown is very light hearted but as you look deeply into it as a reader it appears very tragic and sad.

The poem by Hood is written in a comical way and it shows how no love can be too strong and hoe a love can come to a tragic end and that there is not always a happy ending. The poet identifies the speaker a couple of times throughout the poem but seems as though the poet is telling a story. The main similarities are that none of the poems actually refer to who is actually speaking and the main difference is that they all look deeply in to different subjects. The historical context in To His Coy Mistress is mainly outlining the fact of how the man was the dominant character in the 17th century and shows how the woman was really just on the side for the man to do the housework and sit around and look pretty.

The historical context in Remember is mainly about how lonely the 19th century was and how much people reacted to events like death and shows how the bonding between two people can be so strong. The historical context in Faithless Sally Brown is really about the time of the press gang existing and this was also a time when comical writing was quite popular and Hood was really known for his comical writing and this piece of work really shows a great piece of comic writing around the19th century. The main similarities overall in the poem are that all the poems talk about how strong love can be and how quick love can finish and it also shows what results can come to certain sides of relationships as for example death which is probably the most tragic end that can come to a relationship no matter what the cause.
