1. Cite a country that gives preference to the use of hard power over the use of soft power as their public diplomacy. In your opinion, is that country effective in using hard power? Give an example and states your reason why.
A country that gives preference to the use of hard power instead of soft power in relation to their Public diplomacy is China. China is evidently one of the most powerful and developed countries in the world. As the result of its participation in world trade and its consequent growing demand for overseas energy and raw materials, the South China Sea has become an increasingly important resource for Beijing. China claims many Islands across Asia. And one of these is the Spratley Islands (which is rich in oil, natural gases and coral reefs) and claiming it as their own. They even sent many warships on the disputed sea and vehemently enforcing law against the Filipino immigrants.
In my opinion, China’s use of hard power in their public diplomacy is effective. Because they consequently take stand for what they believed for as they were the owner of the disputed island. They strongly stand and never give up its claim. And also; they have strong military power that they can use against the defender countries. Though we have a strong stand, we all know that we can never challenge the military capabilities of China against our military power for it is broad, skilled and well funded investment into armed forces agencies.
2. Cite a country that gives preference to the use of soft power over the use of hard power as their public diplomacy. In your opinion, is that country effective in using soft power? Give an example and states your reason why. A country that gives preference to the use of soft power over the use of hard power as their public diplomacy is United Kingdom. We all know that Britain became part of World War I and World War II.
But things had changed. From being coercive and aggressor before now they used their culture to invade the world. British pop culture has an important role in the world. The British culture can be seen anywhere. They are famous for its educational institutes like Oxford and Cambridge. From the Beatles onwards began the British music scene. Television shows like British Got talent, and famous British singers like Adelle. Although not as big as the blockbusters which come out of Hollywood, the British film scene is as alive as ever, with hits such as Notting Hill, and Hot fuzz. British actors are in demand, with Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Sean Connery and Hugh Grant all immediately springing to mind.
When it comes to books and literature, Britain is responsible for Harry Potter, the biggest book sensation ever, and one which appeals to all ages. I strongly say that British is effective using soft power. They invade the world by their culture. And also by doing this they can promote their country worldwide. This Public Diplomacy of Great Britain proved they are capable to turn the heads of other people to their country by using what so called “soft power”. Today, art and culture plays an important role in promoting country’s reputation and became an effective way to countries growth socially and economically speaking.
